Photojournalists Learn from the Experts
By Elizabeth Cheney,
UF College of Journalism and Communications
Students
gathered at the Star-Banner Newspaper
Mar. 22 to learn how to take pictures
worth 1,000 words and found the presentations
so interesting they wished they had more
than a day to learn from the photojournalism
experts present.
"I
really enjoyed this workshop and think
it has taught me a lot of information
that I will be able to share with fellow
journalism students," said Antonia
Robinson, a high school senior in attendance.
"It was not long enough, though.
How about a weeklong camp?"
Young
photojournalists were given the opportunity
to interact one-on-one with the presenters
and to ask questions about the photojournalism
profession.
"Photojournalism
is really a career I'm considering, so
this was a big help to me," said
Karishma Patel, a student participant.
The
organizers of the workshop hoped to bring
a diverse group of students together to
learn more about effective photojournalism
and journalism careers.
Billie
Monroe, Role Models Foundation board chair
and president, said, "I think the
event accomplished everything we set out
to do, and we hope to even improve upon
this in the future."
About
20 middle and high school students from
Alachua, Duval, Marion and Putnam Counties
heard presentations from John Freeman,
associate professor for the University
of Florida College of Journalism and Communications;
John Kaplan, associate professor for the
University of Florida College of Journalism
and Communications; and Alan Youngblood,
chief photographer of the Star-Banner
Newspaper. The students also enjoyed a
tour of the Star-Banner Newspaper offices,
hands-on experience with camera techniques,
photo-judging contest and free continental
breakfast and lunch.
The
event was co-sponsored by the Knight Division
of the University of Florida College of
Journalism and Communications, Role Models
Foundation, Alachua/Bradford College~Careers
Tech Prep program, Star-Banner Newspaper
and the St. Petersburg Times.
