Florida High School Students Hit a Homerun
By Mable J. Baker, Youth Coordinator, Role Models Foundation
For 12 years young aspiring middle and high school journalists have made the trek to the University of Florida’s College of Journalism and Communications to participate in the annual Summer Journalism Visitation Program.
This year more than 60 students attended the free one-day workshop themed “The Fabulous World of Sports” held on June 20, 2009 from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Weimer Hall.
Participants worked with professional journalists and communicators such as columnist Bill Maxwell, TheSt. Petersburg Times; Nathan Crabbe, TheGainesville Sun; Julie Garrett, Santa Fe College; Dave Schlenker, Star Banner and Jannet Walsh, Workforce Connection, Citrus, Levy and Marion.
“It was new. It was more interactive than other workshops I’ve attended.” 11th grader Teawanna said. “I learned a lot about journalism.”
The opening program, moderated by Charles Harris director of the Knight Division, featured a panel discussion with retired sports columnist Hubert Mizell formerly of The St. Petersburg Times and WCJB TV 20 weekend sports anchor Chris Price.
In an effort to teach students the importance of skillful research, news gathering and multimedia production, the participants were assigned to cover the University of Florida sports summer camps.
“I learned that you have to get out and talk to people,” Brenna, a Seminole County high school senior said. “You can’t just sit on the sidelines.”
Designed for rising 8th through 11th grade students interested in journalism and communications, the workshop attracts talented student journalists throughout the nation.
Each year participants complete articles and production projects to include in their portfolio. See http://ufsummerjournalism.tumblr.com/ and http://sjvp.wordpress.com/ to view the 2009 student projects.
The program included presentations on admissions, financial aid and an overview of the College of Journalism and Communications.
The event is sponsored by the Knight Division; the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications; Role Models Foundation; Santa Fe College and Alachua /Bradford School Districts Career Pathways Consortium.
