June 1998
Florida youth and their parents arrived at the University of Florida
campus on June 20, 1998 for a day of exciting activities at the
U.F. Journalism Visitation Program. U.F. President John Lombardi
welcomed 130 participants.
Events included a panel
discussion with career professionals, writing and broadcasting labs
and photography tips. A highlight was the mock press conference
with Mark Long of MTV Road Rules, Bill Maxwell, St. Petersburg
Times columnist, and Christy Neumann, outgoing Miss Florida.
The day concluded with a reception in the president's sky box. Students
and parents talked informally with special guests, and students
received certificates of participation.
The visitation was sponsored
by Role Models Foundation, The Knight Center at U.F.'s College of
Journalism and Communications and Florida School-To-Work. Role
Models Today youth panel advisors and parents attended a Role
Models Today newspaper planning session the following morning.
Several students stayed the next week to attend the Summer Journalism
Institute at the University of Florida.
