There must be an easier way to get bumbleberry pie!
By Asia Clifford, 7th grade, September 29, 2007

This summer I went to Wyoming and Montana with my grandmother and then drove up to British Columbia, Canada, where I had to go through customs. We waited in a short line of cars and saw signs that were in both English and French.

We drove up to the window where the customs officer was, and I handed him my passport, which I almost forgot to sign. He had a very serious manner. He wasn't mean, but he didn't smile. He started asking us questions, such as “Where are you from?” We said that we were from Florida but that we were on vacation staying in Wyoming. He said, "This must be a rental car then because the license plate says Washington."  He also asked what my relationship was to the driver to make sure I wasn't being kidnapped.

Once we got into Fernie, Canada, we went to Smitty's Family Restaurant. I got out of the car and was so excited to see my first Canadian, besides the customs officer.

In the restaurant we ordered the local favorite, bumbleberry pie. The pie had five different berries -- huckleberries, strawberries, blackberries, blueberries and raspberries. I realized the people in the restaurant weren't very different from the people in the United States, and they all seemed to know one another.

Going through customs and visiting another country were really exciting and interesting.
