What is real about reality TV?

A main issue facing the nation today has a lot to do with what is shown on television. In the past few years, reality TV has seemed to flood the stations. But in fact, this “reality TV” is usually not in the least bit realistic. Unfortunately, a large portion of the young people in America look to these shows for guidance and advice.
Doesn’t it always seem unfair when everything good happens in the movies, but never in real life? Of course, no one would like movies that always have bad endings. In the back of our minds we do think that good things should and could happen to us. For example, many young girls place Paris Hilton as their idol. They want to be just like her, even though they know nothing of any of her daily problems or struggles. If people knew everything that happened behind the shows of Laguna Beach, The Real World or Newlyweds, they would probably realize these are not the kinds of lives they should be imitating.
The sad truth is that most people will never be truly satisfied with their own lives. They will always look to others to set an example that they can follow. Our society has become so enthralled with reality television that it makes them think their lives can be just like that. It is unfortunate that they can’t just step back and realize how good they have it compared to so many. |
