High School: Today's Technology for Lifetime Learning
By Anthony Ramos
Eastside High School
GAINESVILLE
- Computer technology is advancing faster than any other technology
today, and, as such, it presents excellent resources for educators
to better the instructional courses they offer. Using these resources
to provide a ``comprehensive educational program,`` as their website states, is the
mission of the Florida High School.
In 1996, the Orange County School Board created an experimental
Internet project, called WebSchool, that offered SAT Preparation
and Computer Programming. The Alachua County School Board also had
begun proposals for such a site, and in 1997, the two counties created
a joint project, The Florida High School. Today, this Internet site
is designed to educate students as per the Florida Sunshine State
Standards. The project's slogan is that it provides comprehensive
education "any time, any place, any path, and at any pace."
Currently, the program provides 21 courses in reading,
language, math and history, and the goal is to have a complete high
school in terms of courses offered by 2001. As dollars available
and faculty grow, this goal becomes increasingly reachable, but
the school already provides results.
If you are interested in joining the high school,
checkout the Web site. Prospective students need to be self-motivated
and ready to commit and must have time management skills. The program
is created for independent learners, but an emphasis is placed on
interactivity. At the Web site, you can find more information and
an On-line Registration form for submission.
