is How We Do It at Academy Prep
By Paul Gaines, Jr.
ST.
PETERSBURG - The 1998-99 school year at Academy Prep Center
for Education in St. Petersburg, Florida was full of many activities.
I met many new sponsors for our school. Academy Prep is a non-profit
private school for
middle school males. Our activities are always educational, full
of fun and sponsored by many different supporters. At Academy Prep
the students participate in many activities. Some of them include
diving, basketball, sailing and swimming and attending baseball
games, football games and plays. We even have a Boy Scout troop
and have gone on a few camping trips.
During
my first year at Academy Prep, I had the privilege to join with
my classmates in participating in the African Dance Ensemble at
the Mahaffee Theater. It was a great experience! At school we have
an acrobatic teacher named Mr. Earnest Furblur, who teaches us how
to ride unicycles, acrobatic wheels, juggling, spinning plates on
sticks and tumbling. We even got the chance to display these skills
in the Martin Luther King, Jr. parade this year.
During
activity time at school we play baseball with our former history
teacher, Mr. Stephen Ponzillo, shoot hoops with Mr. Jesse Williams,
our basketball coach and science teacher, or go to South Heritage
Nursing Home to visit with the elderly with our reading and speech
teacher, Mr. Sidney Kirkpatrick. On some
Fridays Mr. Kirkpatrick and four other students and I are taught
scuba diving with Mr. Bob Williams. He teaches us the fundamentals
of scuba diving. This year I was also encouraged to enter an oratorical
contest for the Optimist Club and did very well in the presentation
of my speech.
You
see, if it were not for our sponsors, we would not be able to participate
in all these activities. We thank our sponsors and supporters for
enabling us to learn and have fun all at the same time.
