Have
you ever wondered what it would be like to interview your favorite
basketball player or TV host? What about being behind the camera
at BET (Black Entertainment Television)? Or maybe you would like
taking pictures for National Geographic.
If
you have goals like these, then maybe it's time for you to get an
internship. Internships are programs that help you learn and give
you and chance to learn more about your future career interests.
What
can an internship do? It helps you gain experience in a career field.
The internship usually gives you a different look--an insider's
perspective--into the industry you plan to pursue as a career. It
also helps build your resume.
Why
do an internship? Doing an internship can help you make some career
choices. You can do internships in at variety of companies; therefore,
you can get a quick glimpse into the future to see if you like the
job enough to make a career out of it. Doing an internship gives
you real-world work experience.
Internships
prove that you have the experience and skills needed to perform
a task. You can gain valuable contacts through the internship that
you can use later.
What
is an internship? It is a supervised work experience in which you
can be exposed to and trained in a particular field. Learning is
what separates an internship from a part-time job. You will work
in exchange for training, experience and knowledge that will help
your career later.
What
types of internships are there? Some are academic; Some are non-academic.
Either can be paid or non-paid. In an academic internship, the work
should be associated with your future educational plans and promote
a greater understanding of your studies.
When can you do an internship? Year-round. Most students do internships
in the summer because they don't conflict with other studies. Spots
are limited in the summer; therefore, you should try to get an internship
at a different time.
Where
can I do an internship? Just about anywhere. You should talk with
your counselor or career advisor for more information. The Internet
is also a great place to find internships. There are also internship
books and magazines.
